Christmas party hairstyles for 2012

Rock the party this Christmas with one of our on-trend, easy to wear hairstyles.

The low slung bun

'The chignon is a huge trend for the party season,' says Bree Davie, Artistic Director and Salon Manager of Trevor Sorbie, Hampstead. 'The neat but modern shape is pure elegance, and works beautifully with smoky eyes for evening drama.'

Blow-dry hair smooth, spraying Trevor Sorbie Beautifully Straightened Protect, Flatten and Shine Spray, £5.10, through the lengths. Part hair into a sleek side parting and separate the section, clipping it away. Brush the back section into a low ponytail, and secure with a hair elastic.

Twist the ponytail, then coil it back around itself to form a bun, pinning securely with bobby pins. Take a separated side section and sweep it around the bun, securing in place with pins. Keep the front fluid but neat. Spray with Trevor Sorbie Beautifully Moisturised Moisture Barrier Hairspray, £5.10, for hold without heaviness.

The mistress pony

Headmasters Pro Artistic Team explain how to achieve this sexy, high ponytail which will work perfectly with little black dresses and minimal tailoring:

Prep hair by blending L’Oreal Professionnel tecni art Volume Riche, £12.35 (0800 072 6699) and L’Oreal Professionnel tecni art Pli, £12.35, to add volume and texture into the roots. Blow-dry smooth using a Mason Pearson brush.

To create a sleek texture to the base, apply L’Oreal Professionnel tecni art Natural Liss, £12.35, from hairline to crown. Position the ponytail tight on top of the head. Once secure, wrap leather binding around the base of the ponytail, as seen at the Ungaro A/W 2011 runway show, for a sexy, strong silhouette.

Swept away

Heidi Klum's new shorter style definitely gets our vote - it's fresh, modern and also a doddle to achieve. It can be hard to find dressy styles for shorter hair lengths, but we think this one is party perfection!

 The classic curl

Sexy and seductive, this has got to be long hair’s finest moment. Wellaflex Silvikrin and Shockwaves Style Director, Michael Douglas, explains how to get the look:

Apply Shockwaves Volume Mousse, £2.49, to damp hair and blow-dry using a large, round bristle brush. For maximum root lift do this with the head upside down.

Once hair is dry, use large barrel tongs to curl the hair; take 4cm sections and wrap backwards around the tongs. Once you have done this to your whole head, spritz with Wellaflex Silvikrin Flexible Hold Hairspray, £1.99.

Tease each section with your fingers to separate the curls and finish with a spritz of hairspray to secure in place.

 The party pin-up

With a cool retro feel that is so on-trend, this hair-up is flattering and glamorous. Get the look by following Headmasters’ Pro Artistic Team’s advice:

Spray L’Oreal Professionel tecni art Volume Architect, £11.60 (0800 072 6699) onto damp hair and finger- dry to create texture and body. Once dry, side or middle-part hair.

Take a large triangular section from ear to ear around the crown. Split into three sections and tease the roots using a pintail comb to create height. Pull hair together midway between the nape and crown, and secure with a pin.

Take all hair from behind the ear and twist together, repeat this on the other side and wrap the sections into a pleat shape and pin. To make this look bang on trend add a little lace: place it two inches deep along the hairline to create an Alice band shape and tie at the nape of the neck.

 The 70s swing

If you are looking for a twist on your straight, long locks, why not opt for a 70’s inspired style? HOB Salons International Creative Director, Akin Konizi explains how to get the look:

Smooth Alterna Hemp Straightening Balm, £17.25 (HOB Salons) through damp hair and comb through, placing hair in a centre parting or working with your fringe.

Blow-dry hair smooth using a paddle brush, until dry. Once complete, use ghd Gold Straightening Irons £125 (HOB Salons) to ensure hair is straight and sleek.

Focusing on the front section of the hair and starting at the mid-lengths, clamp the straightening irons together and slowly guide down the hair twisting upwards as you get to the ends, creating a subtle outward flick. Mist with Sebastian Shaper Fierce Hairspray, £15.95, (HOB Salons) to complete the look.

The hive

From Bardot to Winehouse, the beehive has always been statement hair – achieve it by following Headmasters’ Pro Artistic Team’s expert tips:

Prep hair by blending L’Oreal Professionnel tecni art Pli, £12.30 and L’Oreal Professionnel tecni art Volume Lift, £10.10 and massage into damp hair. Blow-dry hair upwards, pointing the nozzle towards the brush to create height.

Divide hair horizontally in two, backcomb the top section by section and the roots to create height. Lightly brush hair back towards the nape of the neck, creating a smooth but volumised surface.

Take all hair to one side and pin in the centre in a vertical line. Pin upwards to lock hair in place. Twist hair clockwise around your thumb into a knot and pin. Use hands to massage hair into place and spray with L’Oreal Professionnel tecni art Gloss Control, £10.10 for a silky finish.

 The glamour wave

This timeless style perfectly combines sleekness and curl; follow these steps by Paul Mitchell Senior Creative Stylist Sam Walters:

Prepare wet hair by applying Paul Mitchell Awapuhi HydroMist Blowout Spray, £17.95 (0845 659 0012) to the roots and Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Styling Treatment Oil, £24.95, through the ends for shine and hold. Dry hair in different directions to create movement while smoothing with a paddle brush. Make sure your hot rollers are switched on!

Starting at the top and working down, take a one inch deep by two inch wide section and bring the hair from underneath the roller and over. Secure with a pin, varying the size of roller to create natural movement.

Once rollers are in, mist with Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Finishing Spray, £16.95, and allow to cool. Take the rollers out and run your fingers through hair

The voluptuous bob

This sassy tousled bob is simple to achieve and works perfectly on mid-length styles. Wellaflex Silvikrin and Shockwaves Style Director, Michael Douglas, reveals how:

Apply Wellaflex Silvikrin Flexible Hold Hairspray, £1.99, to sections of hair, then wrap the sections round your fingers to create a roll and clip in place. This should be done loosely and with around eight sections of hair in total.

Leave hair like this for about 15 minutes to set the style. Remove all clips and ruffle through the sections using your fingers. Finish with a spritz of strong hold hairspray to hold the hair in place.

 The gin twist

This Grecian style overhead braid was created by Emma Rees, founder of The Blow Bar. 'This is a key look seen at various fashion shows and events in London,' says Emma.

Divide unwashed, long hair into three sections, then start braiding behind the ear and work up to the front of the head; a tight braid is neat, while a loose, messier braid gives a ‘boho’ effect.

Once the braid is complete, secure at the nape of the neck with pins. Finish with hairspray and add hair accessories as desired.

The vintage wave

40’s inspired glamour is so on-trend this season, so why not try a soft wave? HOB’s Akin Konizi explains how to get the look:

Begin with towel-dried hair and add a heavy side parting using a wide-toothed comb. Spray Wella Professionals Perfect Setting, £9.65 (HOB Salons), throughout and blow-dry hair smooth.

Section the hair, and beginning at the back of the head and at the root of a one-inch wide section, use straightening irons and rotate them down the hair to create a ringlet. Apply to the entire head.

Use a Mason Pearson brush through the curls to remove any flyaways and smooth the hair. Spray with Wella SP Perfect Hold, £15.50 (HOB Salons), to finish.
